The best hospitals in Switzerland in 2026, according to Newsweek

Newsweek's World's Best Hospitals 2026, an annual ranking compiled with the research firm Statista, covers Swiss hospitals alongside those of 31 other countries. The 2026 edition, published on 25 February 2026, ranks 33 hospitals in Switzerland and places eight of them in its global top 250, drawn from 2,530 hospitals in 32 countries.

The first four Swiss places go to university hospitals: Zurich, ninth in the world, Geneva (19th), Lausanne (21st) and Basel (23rd). Klinik Hirslanden in Zurich is fifth in Switzerland and 56th in the world, the highest-placed private hospital. Bern's Inselspital, the fifth university hospital, is seventh, one place behind the Lindenhofspital, also in Bern.

Below the ranked hospitals, Newsweek lists two orthopaedic hospitals in Zurich without a rank, Schulthess Klinik and Universitätsklinik Balgrist: specialised hospitals that peers recommended often are shown separately rather than scored against general hospitals. Ten of the 33 belong to the Hirslanden group, described in our guide to the Hirslanden hospitals, and two to Swiss Medical Network: Clinique Générale-Beaulieu in Geneva and Privatklinik Bethanien in Zurich, which is also part of our network.

What the ranking measures, and what it cannot tell you

Each hospital's score combines four sources: hospital quality metrics (40%), recommendations from doctors, hospital managers and other health professionals (30% national, 5% international), patient experience (18.5%) and a Statista survey on the use of patient-reported outcome measures (6.5%). The global top 250 is built from six metrics, among them a bibliometric score based on publications, citations and h-index.

For Switzerland, the methodology names the data behind the quality score: the Federal Office of Public Health's risk-adjusted mortality ratios, and indicators from ANQ, the national association for quality development in hospitals, on post-operative wound infections, pressure ulcers, falls and avoidable readmissions. Hospitals in the Initiative Qualitätsmedizin receive a bonus. Patient experience comes from ANQ's national patient survey. Until the end of 2025, the most recent mortality data available were from 2023.

The numbers for individual conditions and procedures are public. The Federal Office of Public Health's quality indicators for Swiss acute hospitals, available from 2008 onwards, give each hospital's case numbers, rates such as caesarean sections, mortality for particular conditions and procedures, lengths of stay and transfer rates. ANQ publishes its measurements for acute care, rehabilitation and psychiatry. How often a hospital performs your procedure each year is worth looking up before you choose.

University hospitals and private hospitals: what each does

Switzerland had 270 hospitals in 2024, according to the Federal Statistical Office: 98 general hospitals and 172 specialised clinics, among them 48 psychiatric and 49 rehabilitation clinics. Five are university hospitals, in Basel, Bern, Geneva, Lausanne and Zurich, joined with their medical faculties in the association unimedsuisse.

The rarest and most complex treatments are concentrated in a few hospitals. Organ transplants are performed at six transplant centres licensed by the Federal Office of Public Health: the five university hospitals and the Cantonal Hospital St Gallen. The cantons are mandated to plan highly specialised medicine jointly, and have done so under an intercantonal agreement in force since 1 January 2009, with one national plan instead of 26 cantonal ones, for areas such as organ transplants in adults, complex neurosurgery and paediatric oncology.

University Hospital Zurich, first in the Newsweek list, reports around 900 beds, around 42,000 inpatients a year and more than 40 specialist departments, and describes itself as covering the entire spectrum of medicine. Its International Office serves patients who live abroad and pay for their own treatment, patients without health insurance abroad and patients whose costs are covered by a company, organisation or embassy.

The private groups are organised around independent specialists. Klinik Hirslanden, the highest-ranked private hospital, reported 335 beds for 2025/26, against around 900 at University Hospital Zurich. The Hirslanden group works with 2,870 partner physicians, who are self-employed, and Swiss Medical Network with over 2,300 accredited doctors; Hirslanden alone treats approximately one third of the inpatients in Swiss private hospitals, according to Remgro, its co-owner until July 2026.

For a patient from abroad the practical difference shows in how a quote is built. At Hirslanden, the international office asks your preferred specialist for an opinion and fee and then quotes for hospital and doctor together; University Hospital Zurich's International Office organises access to its departments for patients from abroad. Neither route is better in general. A transplant points to one of the six transplant centres; a planned operation, to whichever hospital performs it often, public or private.

Zurich: University Hospital Zurich and the private hospitals

The canton of Zurich has more hospitals in the Newsweek list than any other, seven of the 33: University Hospital Zurich (first), Klinik Hirslanden (fifth), Hirslanden Klinik Im Park (tenth), Stadtspital Zürich Triemli (12th), Kantonsspital Winterthur (13th), Privatklinik Bethanien (22nd) and Spital Zollikerberg (31st). The two orthopaedic hospitals Newsweek lists without a rank, Schulthess Klinik and Balgrist, are also in Zurich.

Among the private hospitals, Klinik Im Park describes itself as the clinic for patients with supplementary insurance on the left shore of Lake Zurich, with a 24-hour emergency station and an intensive care unit. Trains from Zurich Airport to Zurich's main station leave every 10 minutes and take 15 minutes.

Four clinics of our network are in the canton: Klinik Bethanien, a multidisciplinary private hospital; Calda Clinic, for diagnostics and precision wellness; The Kusnacht Practice, with its office in Zollikon, for addiction and psychiatry, one client at a time; The Gentlemen's Clinic, for men's aesthetics. Bethanien belongs to Swiss Medical Network.

Geneva: HUG and the private hospitals

Four Geneva hospitals are ranked: the Geneva University Hospitals (HUG), second in Switzerland and 19th in the world; Clinique Générale-Beaulieu (11th); Hôpital de la Tour in Meyrin (19th); and Hirslanden's Clinique des Grangettes in Chêne-Bougeries (20th). Hirslanden's second Geneva hospital, Clinique La Colline, is not in the list.

Geneva's private hospitals include two of Hirslanden, La Colline and Grangettes, and one of Swiss Medical Network, Générale-Beaulieu. In 2026 Hirslanden and HUG opened a joint outpatient surgery centre in Geneva, the CCAG, with ten operating theatres.

Geneva Airport's station lies beneath the terminal, and trains reach the city centre in 7 minutes, up to seven an hour at peak times. Geneva is in French-speaking Switzerland. In our network, Clinique de Genolier, which Swiss Medical Network calls its flagship facility, lies between Geneva and Lausanne in the canton of Vaud, and Matignon, a group for non-surgical aesthetic medicine, has sites in Geneva and other towns of French-speaking Switzerland.

Lausanne and the Lake Geneva riviera

Lausanne's university hospital, CHUV, is third in Switzerland and 21st in the world. Clinique de La Source is 21st in Switzerland and Hirslanden's Clinique Cecil 27th; Hirslanden's Clinique Bois-Cerf is not in the list. Two clinics of our network are in Lausanne: Clinique de Montchoisi, a Swiss Medical Network clinic, and Clinique Cecil, a Hirslanden hospital.

East of Lausanne, along the shore through Vevey to Montreux, no hospital appears in the ranking. This is where several of the specialised clinics in our network are: Clinique La Prairie for longevity and revitalisation, Clinic Les Alpes for residential mental health and addiction recovery, Laclinic for aesthetic surgery, Clinique Valmont in Glion for neurological, orthopaedic and spinal rehabilitation, Biotonus in Montreux for supervised detox, and the Le Mirador Dermatology Centre on Mont-Pèlerin.

Trains from Geneva Airport run to Lausanne, Vevey and Montreux without a change at Geneva-Cornavin. The riviera is French-speaking.

Bern, Basel, central and eastern Switzerland

The canton of Bern has six ranked hospitals: the Lindenhofspital (sixth in Switzerland, 123rd in the world), Inselspital (seventh, 131st), Hirslanden's Klinik Beau-Site (23rd) and Salem-Spital (26th), the Sonnenhofspital (32nd) and Spital Aarberg (33rd). Inselspital is the university hospital of Bern and one of the six transplant centres.

Basel has University Hospital Basel (fourth, 23rd in the world), the Claraspital (eighth, 139th) and Bethesda Spital (16th), and the Cantonal Hospital Basel-Landschaft is ranked at Liestal (29th) and Bruderholz (30th). From EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse, bus 50 runs to Basel SBB station every 7 to 10 minutes and takes about 20 minutes.

In central Switzerland the Lucerne Cantonal Hospital (14th), Hirslanden's Klinik St. Anna in Lucerne (15th), Spital Nidwalden (25th) and Hirslanden's AndreasKlinik in Cham (28th) are ranked; in Aargau, Hirslanden Klinik Aarau (ninth); in eastern Switzerland, the Cantonal Hospital St Gallen (17th) and Hirslanden's Klinik Stephanshorn (18th). Three clinics of our network, all Swiss Medical Network clinics, are in the Mittelland: Clinique Générale Ste-Anne in Fribourg, Privatklinik Obach in Solothurn and Villa im Park in Rothrist, Aargau.

Ticino, Valais and the Alps

No hospital in Ticino or Valais is among the 33. The only ranked hospital in the mountain canton of Graubünden is the Cantonal Hospital in Chur (24th).

Ticino is Italian-speaking. Its airport at Lugano describes itself as the hub for general and business aviation in southern Switzerland. In our network, Clinica Ars Medica in Gravesano, near Lugano, is a Swiss Medical Network clinic; Swiss Medical Network also runs Clinica Sant'Anna in Sorengo.

In the Alps our network has Privatklinik Meiringen in the Bernese Oberland, for psychiatry and rehabilitation, and Clinique de Valère in Sion, a Swiss Medical Network clinic for gynaecology and women's health. Valais, like Bern, Fribourg and Graubünden, is officially multilingual.

Languages, airports and travel times

Switzerland has four national languages: German, French, Italian and Romansh. German is the main language of more than 60% of the population; French is the main language of the Romandie, which includes Geneva, Lausanne and the riviera; Italian of Ticino. Bern, Fribourg, Valais and Graubünden are officially multilingual.

In 2024, 24% of employed people in Switzerland usually spoke English at work, against 61% who spoke Swiss German and 28% French, according to the Federal Statistical Office. English is common but far from universal, so ask in advance which language your treating team will use and whether an interpreter is provided; Hirslanden International, for example, organises interpreters on request.
